If you are assaulted

  • Your Goal is survival
  • You are not the blame. The blame for any act of sexual violence should lie solely on the perpetrator.
  • Get to a safe place &
    Call 911
  • Do not shower, douche, change clothes, eat, drink or smoke as these could contaminate possible evidence.
  • Do not disturb the crime scene.
  • Report the incident to law enforcement. This does not mean you have to press charges.
  • Get medical attention.
  • Try to recall all that you can about the assailant: tattoos, voice, hair, clothes, scars etc.

If you have a friend or family member who is a victim..

  • Listen. Be there for your loved one.
  • Believe them. It takes courage to talk about a sexual assault with other people.
  • Give non-judgmental support.
  • Empower them to make their own decisions.
  • Respect their privacy, let them decide who to tell.
  • Offer to go with them to talk to someone they trust.
  • Do not tell them to forget.
  • Know that sexual assault happens to males, too.

Are you in a safe place?
If you aren't, do you need transportation or some other means to help you get to a safe place?

If less than 96 hours ago
If you were assaulted less than 96 hours ago, call the police in the jurisdiction in which the assault occurred, and file a police report. The police will escort you to the nearest hospital with a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program or other appropriate facility if major trauma is involved.

If more than 96 hours ago

If the assault happened more than 96 hours ago, contact the police department in the jurisdiction in which the assault occurred. Explain what happened. The police will set up an appointment for you to come in and make an official statement. You can also call a Hotline Operator at the Piedmont Rape Crisis Center. An operator can help you know your options. The hotline is always answered – (770) 586-5423.

Talk With Someone Who Can Help

If you're seen at a local hospital following a recent assault, someone from the Piedmont Rape Crisis Center will be there, providing information, support and referral sources to you.
